I remember as a kid when I got a new pair of shoes I thought that they would make me run faster, jump higher and be the best of the vertical jumpers. Of course, as I got older I realized that though there is something to be said for a good pair of shoes, there was a lot more to it than that.
More recently I was working with a student athlete that wanted to learn how to jump higher and improve his vertical leap. He was an average sized kid but a very hard worker and a pretty good athlete. I knew that he had the determination and drive to become a great vertical jumper if he said his mind to it and dedicated the time and energy that was necessary.
I asked him why he wanted to be one of the best vertical jumpers in the league and how that would help him in his athletic pursuits. How would adding 6, 10, 15, or even 25 inches improve his game?
He gave me the typical answers that a teen age boy would give but one thing he said really stuck with me. He said that being able to jump higher would give him the extra confidence that he needed to not only be a better athlete but to dominate his competition. You see, he was already a pretty good athlete but he didn’t dominate.
I was convinced that he truly had a sincere desire to work hard and put in the time and energy necessary to be one of the best vertical jumpers. He just needed the right vertical jump training program to help him succeed.
